A Common Wedding Photography Question Have You Worked At Our Venue Before?

A Common Wedding Photography Question:

A question many couples planning a Wedding ask me as a Photographer is, “Have you worked at our venue before?”

Common Wedding Photography Question
This is a perfect example: I had not worked at this venue in literally ten years. There had been a few changes cosmetically. But I found this original detail that is a little out of the way that was the perfect setting for this photo.

Wedding Photography FAQs:

First, the question concerning having worked a venue previously is very common.  People understandably want to make sure the Wedding Photographer is comfortable and confident at their venue.  Many times, I have at least a fleeting experience with the venue.  However, sometimes the venue will be new to me.   But that is not really a negative thing!  Let me explain a little.

It is always nice to come to a location with fresh eyes.  It is nice to be challenged a little to think outside of the box–I can attribute it to “Artist Brain.”  It is fun to explore and capture new things.

When I do have a couple that will be bringing me to a new location, I usually scout the location ahead of time to see what is available and how I think it will photograph at different times of the day.  I will have a conversation with the couple about why they chose this venue and what they especially love about it.   I do also chat with the venue coordinator or planner to make sure I know what is off limits and what I am allowed to do.  Asking these questions is really important to bring your vision for your Wedding Photos to life.

Gables and Gardens Rustic Wedding Photos
Last year was the first time I worked at Gables and Gardens. I took a trip up there the week before to scout the location and especially loved the Bridal Suite.

Experience Makes A Differrence In Wedding Photography!

One of the reasons I never get stressed about a new to me venue is that I have been a working Wedding Photographer for over 20 years.  Between the actual work experience and the many trainings I have invested in over the years, I am pretty confident in my skill with camera settings, lighting and posing.

Thanks Ashleigh! I love a new challenge!

Love that you take the time to talk to your couples about why they chose a venue. Your clients are so lucky to have you!

Love this. You can let your creativity take over in a new venue. The fundamentals don’t change but a new venue can add a special spark.

I completely agree, Susan! Sometimes working at a new location can create gorgeous and unique wedding portraits! I love that you calm their fears by scouting the location before the wedding day!
