Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: A Practical Guide

How do you go about choosing a Wedding Photographer?

The best advice I can give to couples on their wedding day is to enjoy every minute.  The next best advice I can give is to make sure you hire a great photographer who can help you relive the day for years to come.

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your event.  Here are some practical considerations:

Mansion Saratoga NY Fall Wedding Photo
Final photo of the barn at the Mansion. Professional lighting, posing and composition are so important.

    Style:

Carefully think about what style of photography you like at the beginning of your search.  What are you drawn to when you are looking at the work of different photographers?  Here are some examples of photography styles:

    1.  Traditional:  This type of photography relies heavily on posed images.  There aren’t too many surprises with this type of photography and it lends itself to a “shot list.”
    2. Photojournalistic:  Photographers who shoot in a photojournalistic style like to capture the day as it unfolds naturally.  It is great for couples who don’t like to “pose” very much.  Very little pre-planning is involved.  This is  fun except sometimes this type of photography  sacrifices some of the more formal images of the event because the Photographers are more intent on what the bride and groom are doing candidly.
    3. Illustrative or Artistic:  This style is usually more updated and blends aspects of the Traditional and Photojournalistic.  It can include more dramatic lighting and contemporary “fashion” style posing.  It is generally more cutting edge.
    Choosing Your Wedding Photographer
I did an abbreviated coverage for this couple so they did not break the bank but still have awesome images.  It was posed and lit, but looks candid.

    Seasoned vs. Inexperienced Wedding Photographers:

We have all heard the stories of couples who use a friend/relative who offers to shoot the wedding for free.  Or someone starting out who does the entire wedding at a very low price point.

Undoubtedly budget is an important factor in choosing any of your wedding vendors.  I am a photographer, so I naturally think wedding photography is one of the most important line items in your budget.  I truly believe that at the end of your event, the one thing you will take away is the photography.

I think that everyone wants to be able to look back and remember the day and all the details.  Your memories from your wedding are too important to risk on someone who has little to no experience.  The good news is that many wonderful photographers can provide a limited/hourly coverage.  Why not hire them to photograph the ceremony, portraits, and a portion of the reception?  That way you get great photos within your budget.

    Adirondack Lake George Wedding Photos
A great photographer can photograph a Wedding at any time of day–not just Golden Hour!

    Personality:

This can be a big one.  Make sure you like the person you choose to photograph your wedding, because you WILL be spending a lot of time with them before, during and after the actual event.  Choose a Wedding Photographer you feel comfortable, and you will look like you are comfortable and having fun in your wedding photos!

Downtown Saratoga Springs NY Wedding Photo

    Technical Expertise:

But wait, before we get all touchy-feely with “Hire the photographer who makes you laugh,” remember that whoever you hire must be able to produce consistent results in many challenging situations.  Low light, time constraints, uncooperative bridal party members–you name it.  Are they using professional grade equipment?

When reviewing portfolios, look for shots that appear to be taken in a venue similar to yours at the time of day/season you are holding your wedding.

Helpful hint:  If all the photos you are seeing in a photographer’s portfolio seem to be black and white, they may have issues with exposure or color balance.  A competent Wedding Photographer should be comfortable shooting both.

My dad has a 35 mm camera that is pretty good. He would be the first person to tell you he can’t make a photo like this. Just saying.

    What Is Included?

Don’t be afraid to ask what is included in the price.  Are printable digital files included, or just social media sized files.  After all, having gorgeous photos created does not really mean much if you can’t make prints from them unless you pay $3,000 additional to get printing rights.

If albums or prints are included, make sure you get to see and touch the actual products.  There is a great difference in products offered from different companies.  Make sure you like what you see before committing to something.

    Wedding Albums
Are printed products such as albums and wall art included in the price?
    Lake George Wedding Photographers
When looking at albums–be sure to check out the quality of the layout of the pages.

Does This Wedding Photographer Have a Contract:

A good contract protects both parties involved.  It spells out what is included, what the liability is, and what redress you have if something goes awry.  Read more about Photography Contracts.  And if the person you are considering hiring to photograph your wedding does not use a contract–go somewhere else.  Run, do not walk away.

    Post Processing:

Does the photographer retouch anything?  Do they correct any exposure or color issues before giving your the files?  Or is that only available for an extra fee?

    Saratoga Springs Wedding Photos
Ask to see an entire wedding.

Ask To See a Full Wedding:

Anyone can show you a compilation of their greatest hits.  Ask to see a wedding from start to finish.  Heck, ask to see several full weddings!

There should be consistency and great shots throughout the entire wedding, not just a couple great shots of the bride and groom.  Photographing a wedding is a marathon, not a sprint.  And guess what?  If the detail shots of shoes are awesome, but the portraits of the Couple, the Families, and the Bridal Party are terrible–not the Wedding Photographer you want.

    Adirondack Wedding Photographers
Be sure to ask what the turnaround time is and when you can expect to get your proofs.

    Delivery:

When will you receive your wedding images?  Get an idea of when you can expect to see your wedding images.

Some photographers will post a sneak peek within days so you can at least see a few.  Some photographers turn around full galleries very quickly, others take more time.  Be aware ahead of time and make sure the timeline is something you can live with.  We have all heard horror stories of couples waiting over a year to view their wedding photos.

Good luck with your planning and choosing your Wedding Photographer!  And remember to enjoy the process!

  • Rustically Speaking | Tips for Rustic Wedding Planning

Rustically Speaking | Tips for Rustic Wedding Planning

    Rustic Wedding Planning Tips
Rustic Weddings are charming and lovely.

    Tips for Rustic Wedding Planning:

I love photographing weddings because I get to see a wide variety of trends.  A huge trend in weddings lately is weddings with a rustic theme.  This theme lends itself well to barns, fields and camp settings, which is perfect for our local region–the Adirondacks.  We have many venues like this that are beautiful, quaint and picturesque, which is great because the term “rustic” can mean different things to different people.  Rustic can encompass vintage, bohemian, country–you name it.  But before you get all excited about the possiblities of Mason jars with wildflowers and bales of hay,  you will want to think ahead and plan things through. A rustic wedding can be fun, but also a little/lot more work.   Here are some ideas and tips to help inspire you with your rustic wedding planning and make the process a little easier.

    Rustic Wedding Planning
Rustic venues can have challenging terrain, so preparation is key.

Rustic Wedding Planning Can Be Primitive

    •  Most rustic venues are a little, well, primitive.  That is part of their charm.  That also means you will most likely need to bring things in.  As in:  tables, chairs, china, etc.  And did I mention restrooms?  You will need to budget for all of these items, and you would be surprised how fast it can all add up.  Before you put any money down on a Rustic Wedding Venue, be sure you understand what is and is not included in the price.
    Barn Wedding Photos
Loved these little lace foot covers from Lily Saratoga.

    Rustic Weddings = Rustic Terrain

    2.  The terrain will likely be a little bit rough.  Skip the stilettos and opt for comfort.

    Rustic Wedding Plannlng Tips
Be sure you have all necessary noise ordinances taken care of if you intend to party into the wee hours.

    Check Out All The Legalities!

    3.  Check the local rules for sound ordinances, traffic issues, etc.  Will you need to obtain a special variance for your event?  Many venues are simply renting their space and not taking care of permits, so be sure you understand what you need to take care of before the event.  Police at the party would be memorable, but not in a good way.

    Stablegate Wedding Photos
These umbrellas were as pretty as they were functional. Great planning ahead!

Weather Considerations for Rustic Wedding Planning

    4.  Make sure you plan for inclement weather.  Umbrellas for guests in case of rain will be much appreciated.

    Tented Wedding Photos
Tents can be fun reception venues. Just make sure they are waterproof, there is a floor for dancing and you have the ability to use heat or AC if necessary.

    Catering On Premises

    5.  Will your caterer be able to bring the food in easily and keep it at optimal temperatures?  Is there a generator on the premises?  Is there running water?  Who is responsible for clean up and trash removal?

    Rustic wedding cakes and desserts
The Groom’s Mom and Sister made all the desserts for this wedding.

    Rustic Wedding Planning:  Climate Control

    6.  In addition to having a plan for inclement weather, you need to also think about climate control  Barns and Tents can become uncomfortable if you do not plan ahead!  Is there a plan if the temperature is unseasonably warm or cold?  Can you have fans or heaters so guests stay comfortable?

    Rustic Wedding Planning

Winter Weddings in Upstate New York are really beautiful. They naturally lend themselves to unique details.  I decided to showcase a few of my favorite Winter Wedding Details as a form of inspiration.

    Winter Wedding Bridal Bouquets:

  • WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY PRICES | What’s Included?

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY PRICES | What’s Included?

Wedding Photography Prices and What’s Included?  It’s a popular question.

As a Saratoga Wedding Photographer, many times the first question a potential client asks me is what are your Wedding Photography Prices and what is included?  While I do understand that pricing is a huge factor in choosing a Wedding Photographer, there are also many variables that make up pricing for an event.  When I am bidding a job, I need to know several things before I can accurately quote a job to my clients.  Here are just three of the things I need to know before giving you a detailed quote:

    Wedding Photography Prices
Getting ready shots are super fun–but it adds time to your wedding photography coverage.

How long do you want a Wedding Photographer to cover your event?

This is very important!  Some people really only need a few hours and some people want a photographer there all day.  There is no right or wrong answer–it is totally personal preference and what your budget will allow.  For example, some people want coverage of the girls getting ready and made up as well as the guys getting ready.  This has a huge impact on the pricing because you will need a longer coverage and possibly a second photographer if the groom is getting ready at a different location.  Do you really need coverage of the full reception–or are the basic formalities enough for you?  Again, covering the entire reception–which we are happy to do–comes with a higher price tag.

    Wedding Photography Prices
These images were created by my Second Shooter from a balcony.
    Tent Wedding Photos Saratoga NY
I love a good party! But do you need a photographer there until the last dance? Only you can know that answer.

Do you want a Second Photographer at your event?

I generally work with an assistant, but some people require a dedicated second shooter at their wedding.  When I hire a Second Shooter, the person is experienced and is highly skilled, not some student off the streets.  Because your wedding is not a time for someone to be just learning their craft.  This will add to the pricing so I can pay my Second a decent wage.  It is a respect thing.

    Albany NY Wedding Photographers
My Second Photographer shot this awesome image from the side when we were doing formal wedding photos of the Bridal Party–I love it!
Mountain Destination Wedding Photo Park City
    Gorgeous wedding in Utah.

Are you hiring us to travel out of our area for a Destination Wedding?

I LOVE to shoot Destination Weddings, but–Travel to a destination always incurs an additional charge.  We need to cover the cost of not only our travel but also the time we will not be working locally for the days we are gone.  For example, if your wedding is on a Saturday we will leave our area on a Thursday or Friday to arrive at your destination with plenty of time for delays and to scout the area for the best locations for your wedding photos.

    Wedding Album Pricing
Just one of the album lines we carry here in our studio. We offer a wide array of printed products and albums and would love to show them to you.

Do you want Wedding Albums and/or Wall Portraits, etc.?

Adding tangible products is important, and they do impact Wedding Photography Prices.  Likewise the type of album, size, covers, etc. will all contribute to the pricing.  We offer the flexiblity of adding products after the wedding, but be aware that committing to products with a package is often less expensive in the long run.

    Glens Falls Wedding Photographers
This photo is from a micro wedding we photographed in Glens Falls at the Queensbury Hotel. We worked closely with the Bride and Groom on a Wedding Day Timeline to accomodate their budget.

As you can see, there are many things to consider when comparing Wedding Photography Prices and choosing your Saratoga Wedding Photographer.  If you would like to know more about our wedding services, our Wedding FAQ is a great place to begin.  Be sure to take a peek at our Wedding Photography Portfolio as well.

  • What Are You Looking for in a Wedding Photographer?

What Are You Looking for in a Wedding Photographer?

What are you looking for in a Wedding Photographer?

If that isn’t a loaded question, I don’t know what is.  One thing I have learned over my many years in business is that no couple is looking for the exact same thing and that good Wedding Photography is never achieved through a cookie cutter approach.

    Ballston Spa NY Wedding Photographers
This candid is one of my favorite images from Angela and John’s wedding. I don’t think they were aware that I was there.

    Connection With Your Wedding Photographer

Most great relationships are built on good communications and trust, wouldn’t you agree?  Your relationship with your Wedding Photographer is really no different.  That is why I feel it is so important to take the time to meet my potential clients (preferably in person) and talk about what is important to them and how they see their wedding day unfolding.  From our initial meeting, to crafting the Wedding Day Timeline for your day, to the day of your wedding and beyond, communicating is so important.

Be sure to include time for your photographer to create beautiful wedding detail images.

Feeling Comfortable On Your Wedding Day

My job on your Wedding day is to capture the moments that are special to you and make you feel comfortable while that is happening.  My goal is for you to feel like either I am not there or I am just a close friend with a camera.  From the smallest details, to the relationships with your family and friends, to how you want to look and feel in your portraits–these elements are reliant on good communication.

    Queensbury Hotel Ballroom Wedding Photography
One of the things I love to build into the Wedding Photography Timeline is some time in the Ballroom or Reception area before the guests come in.

    Your Wedding Photography Budget

Many times, people express concern that a good Wedding Photographer may be out of their budget.  This is also a topic that deserves clear communication.  Did you know that you don’t necessarily need a photographer present for the entire day to have amazing wedding photos?  Many of us offer hourly coverage options so you can get wonderful images while staying in your budget.  Find out more about about Wedding Photography Pricing.

Pantone Classic Blue Color of the Year 2020

Pantone Classic Blue 2020 | Every year Pantone chooses a Color of the Year.  The color for 2020 is Classic Blue.

Blue is not a totally new color for me in terms of weddings.  Blue is a favorite color for many people in general, and it has always made an appearance every year at some events. This year, however, it will be BIG.  So here are some ways for you to incorporate Pantone Classic Blue into your big day.

Engagement Rings–start the whole process in the blue from the very beginning with a blue gem like a sapphire or aquamarine.

Inclement Weather On A Wedding Day

Weddings are considered “uncontrolled events.”  What that means is you cannot be in total control.

As a photographer, I am not in control of the weather in particular.  Over the years, I have learned to not only accept this but to embrace it.  While I always go into an event with a general plan, the weather can sometimes throw a monkey wrench into the plan.  If the weather stinks, I may not be able to get outside with the couple for some planned shots in a cool location.  That is when I know I need to get creative and work with what I have indoors.  I used to sometimes think this was tragic.  Now I view it as an opportunity.

This was a super cold day iin the Adirondacks at the Fern Lodge. Before we went outdoors, I knew I wanted to use the fireplace in the Great Room because it is so in keeping with the area.

As you can see, you don’t need to be outdoors in a park during the Golden Hour to create interesting and beautiful wedding photos.  Your photographer does need to understand lighting and posing, that’s all.

Canoe Island Lodge Destination Wedding | Lydia + Carter

I photographed a Canoe Island Lodge Destination Wedding this month and wanted to share it here because it had so many wonderful candid moments and it was a blast to photograph.I feel like the best way to showcase this particular wedding is with a slide show:

Things I loved about this wedding:

It was a great mix of laid back and traditional elements.  The bride and groom both wore cowboy boots with their formal attire.  No one was taking themselves too seriously.  I got to work with some of my favorite wedding vendors.  And the details were fantastic.

    Some of my favorite moments:

First up, Steven and Jamie eloped on a Friday in historic Congress Park.  The couple was married by local Wedding Officiant Reverend Joy Burke.  It was a perfect sunny day for a romantic elopement in the Italian Gardens at the park.

We took a few minutes outdoors right before the sun set over Lake George.

Karissa and Curtis had a small but lovely affair at the Mansion in Saratoga.

I love the stone building across the street from the Mansion. It was a great backdrop for some photos.

The last wedding of the Fall season was the other evening when Karee and Fred got married at The Mansion in front of a few friends in the rustic barn.

Summer Wedding at Ft William Henry Lake George | Justin + Liz

Back in August I had the opportunity to photograph a Summer Wedding at Ft William Henry for Justin and Liz.  I have known Liz and her mom for many years (more than I really care to admit–LOL).  It is always so much fun for me to photograph a wedding where I not only have photographed the bride over the years, but also have photographed many of the guests!  Lake George is special to this couple because that is where they got engaged.  Below is Liz and Justin’s story:

How did you meet?  Justin and I met in a bar in Glens Falls coincidentally through a mutual friend.   We did not hit it off at first, but as we spent time together, we became best friends and eventually fell in love.  We were together for one and a half years before he proposed to me.  He proposed in Lake George on the pier with all of our families waiting for us there, which was a complete surprise!  We planned our wedding for two years and chose Ft. William Henry as our venue due to it being a place Justin loves–he loves history and is in the National Guard.

Getting ready photos are always fun. I feel like it sets the tone for the entire day.

This kind of just evolved. I loved the silhouette of Liz, then zoomed in on the detail of the veil.

What was your favorite memory of the day?  Justin and I planned fun entrances for our bridal party and parents to enter the reception to.  This made it such a fun time for to see all our friends and family let loose and have a great time celebrating our wedding!

Any advice for couples planning a wedding?  Don’t sweat the small stuff!  Everything will work out and come together.  Also, try to get responses from all of your guests on food preferences and attendance!  This makes it much easier to plan for everyone!  Lastly, book a great DJ that can get the party started!
