Power Helmets, Lost In Space and Why You Need Printed Photographs | Saratoga Springs Wedding Photography

    Saratoga Springs Wedding Photography
This is the picture from my grandparents’ wedding in the 1920s. I am so happy to have this as a print in my office.

I get asked this question all the time: So why do we need an actual printed photograph?

There is a famous quotation by some photographer somewhere (my brain cannot remember where I heard it) that goes something like, “It is not a photograph until it is actually printed.” I think I am absolutely screwing this up, but I really do believe in the sentiment.

There are tons of photographers out there who will do what I affectionately term a “drive by shooting,” i.e. capture images and give them to you on a disk. Excuse me, but Big Deal. What next? Go download them on your computer and forget you have them–how many people are guilty of this? Maybe some day get around to printing them at the mini lab? I think this is a grave disservice to clients, and here is why:

I have always loved photographs, and I was the kid who helped organize the family albums. But every portrait photographer says that somewhere on their website. What I feel really passionate about is leaving a tangible visual legacy for your family.

I believe there are different types of portrait photography. There are the kind of snapshots everyone makes of their kids and loved ones. The casual, in the moment kind of picture where you just want to remember something, so it does not really matter if the lighting or posing is kind of crappy–just so you have something, anything. Every day slice life of pics, like the one I have with one of my kids with underwear on her head because she was calling it her Power Helmet (you know who you are). Most of my family pictures like this were made before I purchased a digital camera, so yes, they are printed. On actual PAPER. By a LAB. And yes, they are in albums. Probably thousands of them–and that is a conservative estimate.

Then there are the type of pictures you actually take your kids someplace and have made. I have those as well–they are in frames, on walls. Because I like to see them every day when I walk by them. They are kind of like the idealized version of how I want to remember my kids’ early years–of course they are minus the underwear headgear and otherwise potentially embarrassing accoutrements. They have clean faces and their hair is actually brushed. They look like they love each other. Like I said, this is the idealized version of how I want to remember those years. At some point, I know they will want to go with that version as well. That is my fervent hope at any rate.

My point with this post is not which type of photography is better. We can have that debate forever and there is no right answer. My point is that it is important to have actual physical prints. You know, those things printed on paper. Since I have switched to digital, I print out way less of my own candid family photos. And this is bad. Very, very bad. Because we do not look at them. The kids still drag the old albums out. I love to hear them laughing and remembering things. But guess what–they rarely ask to see the pictures that are downloaded on the computer. I am very afraid that at some point, those years will cease to exist in their minds. Or at least not be remembered as

In days. She ready the use review canadian family pharmacy shave your product. I conditioner over that didn’t.

clearly and vividly. And what happens if the hard drives crash? What happens when you lose your phone? When someone’s house burns down, the thing they most regret losing is not the TV, the couch or some other “thing.” It is always the pictures. What if you never had them to lose in the first place? How sad.

So I am sort of an evangelist when it comes to printed photographs. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents all left a visual legacy with photographs. I can pull them out and tell my kids about them, and my kids can see what they looked like as young adults. Sharing your images on Facebook is cool and everything, especially if some total stranger “Likes” one of your pictures. But what happens 100 years from now when USB Flash Drives are as obsolete as the Eight Track Tape? Is Facebook still going to be with us? If it is, I doubt your page will still be active. Will most people have transferred their pictures to different media? Or will they have accidentally thrown out their memories? Will your family pictures simply be Lost In Space?

I absolutely value the art of the printed photograph. But I value the art of my family’s life even more.

    Long Island Vineyard Portrait Session

Ella is a little girl I have had the joy of photographing since she has been born.  She is five now and heading to kindergarten. I sometimes think that five is really the perfect age to do formal portraits of little kids.  They are cute and they are good listeners at that point, so it is not so much of a crap shoot.   Children this age usually do not need a nap at the optimum time for good outdoor light and it is easy to bribe them when things get a little rough.  They can be exuberant without being totally wild, if that makes any sense.  I got to do a series of portraits of her several weeks ago on Long Island at a vineyard on the North Shore.  There were a lot of really nice backdrops with good available light combined with not a lot of people around watching us during the session, which can sometimes make kids nervous.  While there were many pictures that I liked, the one below is the one I absolutely love.  I think this photo captures her at a really peaceful moment.  And I especially love her curly hair and her luxurious eyelashes.

I love soft, diffuse lighting for portraits of children.

The lighting that day was perfect and I really love the contrast of the yellow with the background.  Be sure to check out some of the other children’s portraits in the Children’s Portrait Photography Gallery.  You can also view Ella’s session from last year at Smith’s Point Park on the beach by clicking here.

Saratoga Springs Baby Photographer | Hello, Alexandria Jan!

I had the pleasure a few years ago of meeting Kyle and Amanda and photographing their engagement and wedding photos. They are lovely people and it is a joy to spend time with them. Recently, they added a new member to their family–Alexandria Jan. Or AJ. Or as Kyle’s brother was referring to her in utero Ajax. (By the way, Ajax was a Greek mythological character–the mightiest of the Greek warriors in The Iliad by Homer.) I was so excited to provide both maternity images and baby portraits for them. Here is their story:

How did you find out you were pregnant?

Kyle and I have always wanted kids but were never too quick to start a family. Last October during one of our random chats we shared with each other that we wanted to start a family. We both agreed that “the right time” was not at any specific time because life and its hurtles never stop. That was the moment when we both agreed we wanted to start trying for a baby.

I love the cute little dress waiting on the hanger

A few weeks later I knew something was different about my body. Kyle, his sister Kayla, and I were relaxing at our house when a chocolate chip cookie commercial came on. We all said at the same time mmm those look good. That was the moment when I said, “Hey Babe, how bout you run to the store and get some cookies I can bake and oh yea, will you pick up a pregnancy test while you’re at the store.” Ky instantly had a smile one his face and I believe that was the fastest trip to Walmart he has ever made. That was a great night because of course the test came back positive and there was a lot of celebrating, crying of happy tears, and eating delicious chocolate chip cookies.

I love how deeply babies sleep.

How did you decide on a baby name?

    Saratoga Baby Photos 04
I love this black and white portrait of all three of them.

Kyle and I have been together for 10 years so we already had ideas of baby names that we loved. We knew what this baby was going to be named whether he/she was a boy or a girl. I suggested to Kyle to incorporate his mothers name Jan, who had recently passed, into our child’s name if she was actually a she. Once we found out our baby was a girl we knew her name was to be Alexandria Jan. now we have a gorgeous healthy daughter and can’t remember our lives before we had her!

As a Wedding and Portrait Photographer, I frequently get to travel to different locations to make photographs of my clients. In the photos below, I traveled to Long Island and photographed Bill, Janet and Cora. We had a very nice day for outdoor photography–sunny, but not too hot. We went to Long Beach on the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County for a few images, then back to the house for more. I like that there is a distinctly different feel to both locations–the beach photos are light while the photos back at the house have more saturated colors. I don’t have a preference for either–I love that they are not the same.

    Style Tips for Portrait Sessions

Spring is the time of year that people start wanting to create family portraits, especially in some of our beautiful outdoor locations in the Saratoga Springs and Lake George areas. As a mom of three girls, I know how stressful planning and executing a family portrait can be. Just getting people where they need to be is a hassle–adding in what to wear and making sure it all looks good together can be rather daunting. Below are some style tips to help you with clothing choices. These simple tips can help you ensure that you love the way your finished portraits look.

I love the look of the clean, classic light pastel shirt in the middle of the busy landscape.

Simplify the Styling for Your Portrait Session:

    1. Think Simple, Clean and Classic. If this is a portrait you would like to display in your home for a longer time period than one year, go classic. This does not imply that everyone needs to wear a khaki pants/white shirt uniform in any way. That can sometimes feel a little stiff for some people. Just keep the clothing simple and in the same color tones.

Saratoga High School Senior Photographer SPAC Portrait
I love the jewel tone of the purple shirt against the green of the background.

    2. Avoid Busy Patterns:  Along the lines of Simple, Clean and Classic–it is usually best to avoid busy patterns when planning a portrait that you want to have hanging in your home over the years. Busy patterns tend to go in and out of style quickly and can really date a photograph. They can also become a nightmare to coordinate your home furnishings around.

Saratoga Springs High School Senior Photographer
I like the way Camryn’s face is really brought out due to the simplicity of her clothing. I usually don’t like big earrings, but it works here because only one shows.

Pay Attention to Footwear and Other Accessories When Styling Your Portrait Session:

    3. Footwear:  Make sure that you carefully choose your footwear. To us, one of the things that can really date a portrait is the shoes. Again, think Simple, Clean and Classic. And make sure the shoes you want to wear match the outfit you will be wearing–if you are wearing more formal clothing, sneakers probably would look a little jarring. Likewise, a casual look would be silly with super formal shoes.

Saratoga Springs Wedding Photographer Engagement Session
Softball Cleats–works for me when you are doing a softball themed portrait:)

    4. Location is Everything:  Think about where you are getting the photographs made. An outdoor location in the Fall would look great with darker, jewel tones instead of very light pastels. Light pastels tend to look wonderful on the beach or at the park in the Spring. Black and white clothing can be really graphic and modern, or it can be elegant, classic and timeless.

Saratoga Child Photographer, Kids Photography Saratoga Springs NY
I like the pastel clothing against all the green. It really makes them stand out. The yellow dandelion was an added plus.

Think About Display Options Ahead of Time:

    5. Display Options:  Think about where you want to hang your portrait and the color tones in the room. Try to coordinate the tones in the clothing to compliment the room. If your room has mostly earth tones, go with that for the clothing in the portraits. Again, everyone does not need to be all “matchy-matchy”–they just need to coordinate.

Saratoga Childrens Photographer, Child Portrait Photography Saratoga Springs NY
They are not all matched, but they coordinate.

    Grooming for Portrait Sessions:

    6. Hair cuts: I tell clients that two weeks before the session is optimal so hair can grow in and look natural.

Maternity Photographer Saratoga Springs, Maternity Photography Saratoga NY
Here, Diane had her hair and makeup professionally styled. I loved the false eyelashes that were applied.

    7. Makeup for women: A light foundation with what you usually wear is great for a natural look. If you are not comfortable applying makeup, but want that polished look, we have several great makeup artists that we are always happy to refer. They will make you look and feel fabulous!

    Saratoga Engagement Photos
Loved the understated makeup Michelle is wearing here.

    8. Sleeves:  Long or 3/4 sleeves really do tend to look best in portraits. We find that tank tops or tube tops can show a little too much skin and can sometimes be distracting in the finished portrait.

    Saratoga High School Senior Photographer
I love the contrast of the jeans jacket with the pearls.

    9. Accessories:  Very large jewelry can sometimes be a little distracting in a finished portrait. When in doubt, ask us. We will be honest:)

    Go Mininmalist:

Saratoga Newborn Baby Photographer, Infant Photography Saratoga Springs NY
Does not get much easier than this:)

    10. Babies look great naked–everyone else, not so much!

Hopefully, this has been helpful and will get you started in the right direction. If you have any questions, be sure to give a call before the session!

Yesterday I got to photograph Michelle and Tim’s Engagement Session in Saratoga.

Even though the day was blustery and cold, it was great! We started out in the Music Room of a good friend’s home (Michelle is an accomplished violinist) and ended up outdoors, despite the cold and intermittent snow squalls. Michelle and Tim were so easygoing and fun to work with–I am really looking forward to their August wedding.

One of the things I love about photographing children’s portraits is the way kids are spontaneous.

I also love that they often show more than one mood during the session.  I always prepare parents for a portrait session by telling them that kids have more than one expression and that is what is so endearing about them.  Below are some photos made during a session on the beach on Long Island.  The first image is just fun and spontaneous.  The second is more introspective and thoughtful.  I know which one I prefer.  Which do you prefer?

  • Saratoga Springs Portrait Photographer//Three Easy Steps to Planning a Wall Portrait

Saratoga Springs Portrait Photographer//Three Easy Steps to Planning a Wall Portrait

    Decorating your home with portraits

Portraits that have been personally designed for you can help to bring a sense of intimacy and vitality to your space.

Why hang a generic print or another piece of mass produced “art” on your walls when you can create something unique and beautiful with your family portraits? I strongly believe that family portraits should be heirlooms that are passed down for generations.

People have been hanging portraits on their walls for many, many years. The example below is an image I created documenting an architectural interior. It shows a portrait painting on a wall that has been carefully framed to match the proportion and colors/tones of the interior. Even the subject matter is in perfect concert with the time period of the room. By the way, one of the biggest “objections” I have heard over the years is that people “just don’t have the wall space.” The portrait on this wall is an oval, but would be approximately 20×24 inches in size. The wall it is hanging on is not huge, but I think it looks just right.

Saratoga Springs Commercial Photographer Blackburn Portrait Design

So how do you go about creating a wall portrait or a grouping of wall portraits that fit your home and your lifestyle? There are several easy steps in the process that will ensure your success.

    1. Consultations:  Start with a consultation with your photographer to determine what mood or feeling you would like to capture. For example, do you want something casual or formal? What is the overall color scheme of the room in which you wish to hang your portrait? The more you can communicate with your photographer, the more successful the finished art will be. If the room you are thinking of has mostly dark tones, then maybe the background should be darker and more subdued. If your home is light and airy, perhaps a pastel palette would be better.

    2. Size and placement are very important in the impact of the finished work. Below is an image I made of my family several years ago. It is 16×20 in size and is in the entry way of our home. The canvas print takes up approximately two-thirds of the width of the wall, but does not seem overwhelming at all. Anything smaller would have seemed a bit silly–the childrens’ heads would have been the size of M&Ms.

Saratoga Springs Portrait Photographer Susan Blackburn
    Entry Way Portrait

    3. Framing: Framing is an important consideration. It is like the icing on the cake. If you are going to invest the time and money creating a family heirloom, take a little care in the framing aspect of the portrait as well. The size and color of the moulding should be complimentary to both the portrait and the room in which it will reside. I chose the black frame in the previous example to compliment the black console table in the hall. If you have mostly modern decor, an ornate, intricately carved frame would probably not look right in your space. Likewise, if you have a more rustic looking style, a super sleek modern frame would not be appropriate.

A wall portrait is an investment that you will want to live with for a long time. Therefore, taking the time to properly plan and create one is very important. Take the time to discuss your ideas in detail with your photographer and you will not be disappointed.
