As we approach the New Year, we have been looking ahead for our High School Senior Portrait Clients. Our clients want to be seen authentically while still being captured in photos professionally. To that end, here is a round up of what will be hottest for the Class of 2027 when they get their Senior Portrait Sessions photographed.
Senior Portrait Trend: Authentic Storytelling and Lifestyle Photos
While some schools still require the traditional style formal “drape” image for the yearbook, most of our clients want a more authentic approach to their session. They want photos that tell a personal story and authentically capture their personalities.
Senior Portrait Trend: Meaningful Locations and Props
In providing authentic images, part of the puzzle is finding out what locations and props have real meaning for our clients. This is especially true if a Senior is very involved with a particular activity or sport. I love doing Senior photos with locations that are meaningful and provide authentic connection.
Senior Portrait Trend: Fashion Inspired or Editorial Styled Senior Photos
A Senior Portrait Session is an opportunity to showcase individual style and flair. While we do recommend one “safe” outfit for a session, the rest is up to our clients. Retro styles or black and white photos are especially fun and a great way to level up your styling game.
Senior Portrait Trend: Creative Lighting and Mood
While we do shoot natural light quite a bit, we also like to play with off camera strobe. This can be really evocative in certain locations and is often very expressive. Creative lighting can really capture moods, styles and vibes.
What Does This All Mean for the Class of 2027?
Your Senior Portraits should authentically capture YOU. So think about the following:
- Bring multiple clothing options that express who you are. Yes, bring one “safe” outfit that will not look too dated in a few years. But also bring items that you love and feel confident and stylish in. Maybe think of a natural outdoors look, a film inspired look, and even a retro look. Variety is so important!
- Your Senior Portraits are all about your life and your story. Bring items that are meaningful to you. Do you have a favorite book? Do you play an instrument? Those are great items to include in your session.
- Location, location, location. Where do you like to hang out? I have photographed kids in bookstores, music shops and vintage record stores. If we get prior permission, almost anything goes.
