The Advantages of Both Color and Black & White Wedding Photos

Why You’ll Want Both Color and Black & White Wedding Photos

When you think of your wedding photos, you might be envisioning colorful florals, the specially chosen hues of the bridesmaids dresses, and all the other the thoughtfully curated colors of your day. However, there is another tool to storytelling through photography that’s just as timeless and powerful—black and white images.  I believe a great wedding gallery features both Color and Black & White Wedding Photos.

At first blush, it might seem as if color photos can do it all but having both color and black & white coverage will give you the best of both worlds. Here’s why:

Black & White Will Capture Emotion Differently

Love the way this image feels like we are peeking through a doorway.

There is just something deeply emotive about black and white photography. By removing the distraction of color, your eye goes straight to the expression—the way your dad looks at you before walking you down the aisle, or the tear slipping down your partner’s cheek during vows. These images are often the ones that feel the most timeless.  Black and White photos can really tug at the heartstrings.

Color Preserves the Vibe of the Day

Color definitely will preserve the feeling and vibe of all the choices you made in planning your wedding.

Color photography lets you relive the day exactly as it was. The warm glow of golden hour, the deep greens of your outdoor venue, the vibrant hues of your bouquet—all of these are preserved beautifully in full color. After all, many couples spend approximately a year planning every single detail of their event—and the colors are a huge component.  You’ll want to remember the rich palette of your wedding design, the outfits, and the natural beauty around you.

Black & White Can Be More Forgiving In Tricky Lighting

I love using black and white during the getting ready portion of a wedding day. It can be very moody and evocative.

Sometimes, lighting conditions don’t cooperate. Harsh overhead sun, neon uplighting at the reception, or mixed lighting indoors can create strange color casts. This is known as color contamination and can be super distracting.  Converting these moments to black and white can actually enhance the photo, saving the an impactful moment without the visual distraction.

A Mix Will Add Variety to Your Gallery

A full gallery of only color images can feel overwhelming—just as a gallery of only black and white may feel flat. When both styles are used intentionally, they complement each other, helping to tell a richer and more nuanced story of your day.

They Will Both Print Beautifully

Black and white prints look stunning on the wall. They often have a fine-art feel, bringing a bit of sophistication and moodiness to your wedding album or home gallery. Paired with vibrant color images, they will help create contrast and depth in your printed memories.

Vibrance vs. Mood

Color just captures the fun and vibrance of this couple.

Ultimately, my goal as your Wedding Photographer is to provide you with Wedding Photos that reflect the full range of moments, moods, and memories from the day. Color captures the celebration, the vibrance, the details. Black and white captures the raw, quiet, emotional in-betweens. When combined, they will document your story with powerfully, with more balance and beauty than either could alone.

I truly believe that a thoughtful, experienced Wedding Photographer will know exactly when to use each to capture your memories and give you a wedding proof set that feels complete.
