How To Prepare For Your Professional Headshot Session | Saratoga Headshots

Your Professional Headshot Session:  How To Properly Prepare

By now I believe most people understand the importance of investing in a great professional Headshot.  After all, your Headshot is your digital handshake.  It is often the very first impression you make on potential clients and employers.  As such, it is important to prepare for your Professional Headshot Session ahead of time.  So what tips can we offer you?  Read on!

Preparing for your Headshot Session

Choose The Right Photographer For Your Professional Headshot Session

Step One is to take time to research and select the correct Photographer.  To start, it is important with any type of Portrait Photography that the Photographer has an excellent grasp of posing and lighting.   Just as important is someone who will take the time to listen to you and hear any and all concerns.  These days, Headshots do not have to be “one size fits all.”  Which brings us to the next point–The Consultation.

Have A Consultation For Your Professional Headshot Session

We like to consult with our Headshot clients ahead of time so we can go over clothing, backdrop and overall vibe they are going for.  We do this for several reasons.  One reason is that many times getting a Headshot done can be intimidating for people.  We find having a conversation makes it less anxiety producing.  We also want to find out details like where you will be using your Headshots and if we have any specific parameters.  Parameters would include if we need to match anything to an existing website.  Or are we doing something super formal or casual.  We also have a list of stylists that we can recommend for Hair, Makeup or Clothing.  After our conversation, you can more effectively choose your clothing and accessories with confidence.

The Night Before Your Appointment

We advise our clients that the night before their Professional Headshot Session they put all their clothing and accessory choices together and have everything ready to go.  This eliminates last minute panic or possibly arriving without key items.  Make sure everything is cleaned and pressed.  Group your outfits together on one hanger for ease of use.  Be sure to hydrate the day leading up to your session and get a good night’s sleep.  It really does make a difference.

The Day Of Your Session

Plan ahead to arrive on time or a few minutes early.  Nothing is worse than getting stuck in traffic and arriving late–and if you are stressed from this, it will show!  You want to have time to unpack and go over everything you brought.

What Happens After Your Professional Headhsot Session?

In our studio, we do our viewing and ordering appointment in person a few days after your Headshot Session.  We have found that we can help you very quickly select the right shots  if we do this in person instead of just throwing an online gallery on the Internet and leaving it all up to you.  Before you come back for that appointment, we cull, color correct and make sure everything looks good before we show you anything.  After you have made your selections, we then retouch your images.  Retouching is one of the most important services we offer our clients, and there is no additional charge.
