Today I want to cover a topic near and dear to my heart–professional business photography. Many times I see a great business that has spent a lot of money on a website and logo, but their images on the site and/or their social media are just–meh. So let’s discuss why a professional photographer is just as important as hiring a graphic designer and a web designer.
The old saying of “a picture is worth a thousand words” has never been more true. Today people are busy and rarely take the time to read all the copy you have carefully crafted. Professional photos are critical for delivering the essence of your brand, communicating professionalism, and giving you a competitive edge. They also demonstrate the personal side of your business. Most consumers’ first exposure to your business is likely to be on social media.
Success on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook is dependent on eye catching photography because people swipe through so quickly. If you want to drive traffic to your site or generate leads, you need to stop the Swipe in it’s tracks.
Consistently high quality photography not only builds brand recognition. It adds a subtle perceived value to your product or service. It is a fact that poor image quality makes it more difficult to earn credibility and trust. If you don’t value your own service or product enough with high quality images, why should potential clients?
Using lower quality images on social media when you use professional images on your website creates confusion in the mind of consumers and devalues your brand. Consistency across all your platforms is key.
What about stock photography you ask? Generic stock images might cost less, but rarely will they truly connect with your brand. The less expensive stock images are usually pretty boring. You also run the risk of your competitors using the exact same images to promote their brand. Can you say Awkward? Holy Brand Confusion, Batman.
Some businesses can take their own pictures. But is that really an effective use of time? What takes some people hours or days to produce can be handled by a professional in a minimal amount of time.
