Just Don’t | Things to NOT Skimp on When Planning Your Wedding

WARNING:  This may be perceived as a rant.  A friend of mine forwarded an article written by a major bridal publication that was like 50 Ways to Save Money When Planning Your Wedding.  Normally, I don’t have a problem with these types of articles.  For some reason, this one just got under my skin.  There were maybe a couple things that were good, but the majority were just ridiculous.  The article claimed you would save $500 planning your wedding by following their “best kept secrets on getting vendors to come down on their price.”  I won’t even get into how a publication that derives most of its income from wedding vendors wants to take income from said vendors.  I will just give you a few tidbits of some of the absurd things they suggested.

    Saratoga Springs Wedding Photographer
Leslie and Jamie had one of the most beautiful weddings on a budget that I have ever seen.  You can read about Jamie and Leslie’s Wedding here.

Suggestion One was to get printable downloads and print your own invitations.  Sounds sane on the surface.  But guess what?  Printer ink is really expensive and most of the things you would download would suck your printer dry after about ten invitations.  And you know you will need to experiment with lining the paper up, seeing what paper you like, whether you actually like what you downloaded, etc.  Most stationary vendors have options for all budgets.  They can probably offer you something in your budget without the stress of the DIY nightmare this could possibly become.  Personally, I can think of way better things to do with my time than fighting with the printer, changing ink cartridges, and centering things properly.  Maybe I am just Type A, but this would make me crazy.

    Wedding Ceremony Otesaga Hotel
Chairs for the guests are a necessity for the ceremony.

Another suggestion was to “skip the chairs at your ceremony.”  Really?  You want your guests (think 80 year old Grandma, handicapped guests)  to stand for 20 or more minutes?  Personally, if I were a guest at that wedding, I would probably take money out of the gift envelope right there.  Who makes guests stand at a wedding ceremony?  That is just beyond rude.

A really good Wedding Officiant or Minister creates a sacred space whether it is a crowd or just two people.

“Have a friend Officiate your wedding.”  OK–as a wedding photographer, I see this one a lot.  Every once in a while it works out great.  The rest of the time, not so much.  I have heard some really inappropriate things said at wedding ceremonies by Officiant “Friends.”  And lots of people are just not that comfortable speaking in front of groups.  As my Wedding Officiant friend Joy Burke says, “A wedding is the most sacred and personal conversation you will have with another human being.”  Don’t leave the most important part of your wedding up to chance.

    Lakota's Farm Wedding Photos
Some stunning floral design by Samantha Nass at a recent wedding at the Wedding Barn at Lakota’s Farm. This is not something an amateur can easily replicate at home.

DIY your centerpieces.  Umm—only if you are a florist.  Making centerpieces is not as easy as it looks.  At least anything you would want to put on the tables for guests to see.  You also need to purchase vases, foam and the flowers–which florists get at wholesale, but you will be paying retail for.  And unless you are doing silk/fake, you need a cooler to keep the flowers fresh.  Do you have enough room in the fridge for all of this?  More importantly, do you really have the time for all this?  Because depending on what you want, it can take an entire day to do centerpieces.

This one made me snarf tea out my nose–“play hard to get”  because it puts you in a better position to negotiate with your vendors.  Because we want to work with people who play games and act like they don’t value our work?  Are you personally motivated to do your best job for someone who acts like they are not really interested in hiring you?  I am much more amenable to tailoring a package to someone’s budget than chasing after someone “playing hard to get.”  You could possibly alienate a vendor who would do an awesome job for you.  I’m thinking no to that one.

Kim’s hair and makeup was fabulous and held up all day thanks to the team of Make Me Fabulous in Saratoga Springs.

They suggest hiring a cosmetology student to do hair and makeup for your wedding.  As a wedding photographer, I can tell you that you will almost 100% not be happy with this option.  Wedding hair and makeup needs to look good for the camera all day long.  The hair can’t be falling out and the makeup can’t melt off your face.  And this is assuming the “student” even shows up to your event.  Also, timing for a wedding is critical.  If you run behind in this area, you will be late for the entire day.  Experience is really important in this area.

A professional stylist produces camera ready hair and makeup. Hair and Makeup by Our Little Secret Beauty Bar/Dress from Lily Saratoga.

The second cousin to the above suggestion is–you guessed it–hire a college art student to do your wedding photos.  Admittedly, I am biased on this being a photographer.  But–this is a big day and there are no do overs.  If your photos are even marginally important to you, don’t even think about this.  Really.

    Glens Falls Bride and Groom
Off camera flash, proper posing and lighting all are important for great wedding photos. Most amateurs cannot do this.

“Not every vendor needs to be local.”  That is certainly true.  But will bringing someone in really save you money in the end?  You will need to pay for their travel expenses and possibly accommodations.  A plus to a local vendor is that they know the area and the venues, whereas some one from out of the area does not.

    Cocktail Hour Otesaga Wedding
Catering is a large part of any wedding budget. Work with your caterer to find options in your budget.

This one was really funny–like laughing until tears run down your face funny.  They suggested increasing your guest count because some caterers will give you a discount if you exceed the minimum numbers required.  Caterers are hiring wait staff, purchasing food, etc. so the more people you have, the higher the expense is to them.  I cannot imagine this would be true.  Best case scenario, it would cost the same as the minimum charge.  Why not work with your caterer for budget friendly food options?  Hot passed appetizers are always more expensive than tables with cheese and antipasto platters.  If you are on a budget, skip the ice sculpture and raw bar.  Personally, if I were on a budget, I would have way fewer people but serve an outstanding dinner at a restaurant.

    Upstate NY Wedding Photographer
Kim and Eduardo had a wonderful Fall Wedding at the Saratoga Winery. It was just 30 people, but it was absolutely perfect.

These were just a few of the highlights.  I totally get that planning a wedding  can lead to serious sticker shock.  But I honestly found some of the suggestions hilarious because while maybe you would save a couple hundred bucks, you would need a whole lot more to pay for therapy after acting on said suggestions.  My tried and true budget suggestions are have a budget, prioritize your needs, cut your guest count and go for off season.  Boring, but they work.

Saratoga Wedding Photographer: Wedding Trends 2013

Classic Black and White Wedding Photos are making a comeback.

OK, so I was just reading an article on Wedding Trends for this year at Bridalguide.com, and I am so happy to report that my brides, as always, are right on trend (and many are way ahead of trend, but that is a subject for another post).  The fun part of being a wedding photographer, especially in an area like Saratoga and the Adirondacks, is seeing what things are trending and how people personalize their event to make it their own.  The following are some of the trends that are current:

The envelopes of this invitation not only have pockets, they are also made of recycled paper. The invitation has a light green pattern/picture as an accent.

This invitation is within a pocket and tied with a ribbon.

    1.  Invitations–Pattern or pictures are very current.  Invitations with pockets and folds to lend a three dimensional look are big this year.  Also, there is a trend toward gleam and glitter with silver or gold foil accents.  Monograms are still in vogue.  Getting photos of you invitations can really help add to the overall design of your wedding album.

This centerpiece/wedding favor is a plant the guests can bring home for their gardens.

    2.  Going Green–a move toward recyclable or sustainable products, particularly in paper goods and invitations.  Plantable trees as favors for guests are gaining in popularity for centerpieces.

A tuxedo jacket with a black tie is always elegant and handsome.

Bonus points for a tie that the groom must tie himself instead of just a clip on.

    3.  Black Tie is back!  Yay!  So handsome.

Peonies are so delicate and beautiful, but are only in season for a very short time.

    4.  Flowers with a delicate petal, such as peonies or roses are on trend right now.

    Birch Hill Wedding 21
These flowers look as if they were gathered from a formal garden.

    5.  English Garden floral design–Brides are looking for arrangements that feel like the flowers were just picked from a formal English Estate garden rather than informal, “weedy” looking arrangements.  Bouquets with tons of green are definitely on the way out, as are orchids.

This floral garland, which was used as an altar decoration, is by Ambiance Floral in Albany, NY

    6.  Garlands are big–either as floral arrangements, paper garlands or garlands hanging from chandeliers.

The champagne glasses were a vintage find at a thrift store.

The Signature Cocktail at this wedding was blue, which contrasted nicely with the purple linens on the high top cocktail tables on the terrace. The Mother of the Bride gets bonus points for coordinating her bracelet to the drink.

    7.  Barware with a vintage feel–think the look of a champagne saucer instead of a flute.  Or mint juleps served in silver cups.  Martini bars are on the way out and are being replaced with artisanal cocktails.  People are looking to make a statement with signature cocktails.

    Lake George Wedding Photo Cake
A more traditional shape and decoration for wedding cakes is back.

    8.  Wedding cake silhouettes are returning to a more traditional shape.

    Emerald wedding shoes.

    9.  The Pantone color of this year is emerald.  Looks great for shoes, especially in an unexpected combination for weddings like suede with a cork heel.

    Mohawk Country Club Wedding Photo
I loved the way Rudy at Experience and Creative Design decorated the terrace for this wedding last year at the Mohawk Country Club in Niskayuna. The white chandeliers with the purple linens was very elegant and fun.

    10.  Chandeliers in outdoor areas to make the space feel more formal or whimsical.

Mohawk Country Club Wedding Bride and Groom Photo
I really liked the peacock blue of the bride’s dress. What you can’t see is that this 1950’s inspired cocktail dress had pockets–so fun! Sidney looked elegant and fashionable while staying true to her personal style.

    11.  Color in the bride’s dress–YAY!

I love seeing the current trends my brides choose to incorporate in their weddings.  I especially like that all of them put their own twist on things to reflect their individuality.  If you are on the cutting edge, we would love to photograph your wedding.

Congratulations to Carey Ann and Tim!

Carey Ann and Tim  were married on May 26 in Lake George at Blessed Sacrament Church on a gorgeous spring day!  The details were amazing–you could see all the time and attention this couple devoted to making sure their day reflected their love for each other and their love for their families.  Instead of a traditional bridal party, Carey Ann’s brothers were her “Bride’s Men” and Tim’s sisters were his “Groom’s Women.”  The veil the bride wore was originally her Mom’s–such a nice touch.  All the  little details– custom made bow ties, the hair jewelry, the beautiful flowers, menu cards– were so well done.   The Inn at Erlowest was a great choice for the venue–cocktails on the veranda, and later a fire in the outside fireplace made the evening especially nice.  Loved the votive centerpiece by the fireplace.

Thank you to all the vendors who helped make my job as photographer easier–The Inn at Erlowest (Erin Dewey), Lipstick N Lashes (Joanna Romanzo and Co.), Jamie and Dan Ross of Best Bytes Media,  Ferri Formals for the unbelievably beautiful dress, and Grand Central Station for the Entertainment.

Black and White Photography lends itself to more photojournalistic style images.

“Life is like a box of chocolates–you never know what you are going to get.”

One of my favorite parts of photographing a wedding is the time before the ceremony when the bride is getting ready.  It is one of the best times of the day to create photos that are in a photojournalistic style.  It is always very exciting, and there are a lot of emotions flying in the air.  There is anticipation, fear, happiness, even a little sadness all at the same time.  You never know going in what you are going to get.  In the first image, I love the way the little girl is playing with the bride’s dress–you can tell she is wondering what it would be like to be the bride herself.  In the second image, the bride’s friends are helping her get dressed, and you can tell by the look on the bride’s face and the gesture of the hands that she is experiencing a wide range of emotions.  In the last image, the bride is looking out the window in anticipation of what is to come.  Her posture and body language all telegraph expectancy, and I love that.

I think the thing I like best about photographing the preparation part of weddings is the transformation that takes place.  It is a rite of passage where a woman is leaving behind one part of her life and taking on a new role.  And honestly, we as a culture have so few formal rites of passage that it is nice to get the chance to document them.  I feel so fortunate.
